MENUDO - 30 years and over 60 million albums later the legend continues. After over thirty years in existence MENUDO without a doubt  has grown into a huge international sensation, and has become the greatest musical phenomenon in the history of all Latin America. Recently recording their latest English hits for McGills Records entitled "Dancin, Movin, Shakin" and "Cosmopolitan Girl".

In 1977, Edgardo Diaz a young record executive out of San Juan, Puerto Rico created an innovative musical concept, totally new and totally radical. The idea consisted in forming a musical group in which members would be replaced  as they reached a certain age. By doing this the group’s image and sound would remain juvenile, so it can continue to appeal to young audiences through the strategic use of music, lyric and language. The result of the formula was MENUDO, with skyrocketing success as the most internationally known teenage idols for boys and girls alike.

Summer of 1978, Menudo became the first Spanish speaking pop music group to break the language barrier in the United States. In the city of New York, the arrival of Menudo in essence was compared to that of the Beatles twenty years earlier. The group’s popularity grew at incredible speed, as  they began to encompass all areas of entertainment, including weekly Menudo TV specials in  Latin America, record breaking albums produced in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Tagalo (Philippine) and Italian, and a feature film which broke box office records at Latin Theater in New York.

In 1983, Menudo began breaking all world records, as they took the Guiness Book of World Record’s top three titles for the largest audience ever. In March of 1983, just three days after MENUDO filled a 30,000 seat venue for three successive performances in Mexico City, 105,000 fans jammed Azteca Stadium to capacity.

The media has pronounced Menudo a musical phenomenon in the United States, giving them an abundance of media hype, through successful presentations throughout the United States. Menudo has recorded 55 LP’s with sales surpassing the 60 million  mark. In it’s history, Menudo recorded in five different languages. Among their greatest hits are: "Quiero Ser", "Subete A Mi Moto," "Si Tu No Estas (If Your Not Here)," "Por Amor," "Los Ultimos Heroes," "Canonball," and their most recent LP: "Donde Este Tu Amor," the title song, "Donde Este Tu Amor," has already made its debut into Billboard Music Charts and continues to work its way to number one.  In English Menudo's comeback hit "Cosmopolitan Girl" on McGILLIS RECORDS has brought them back into the English market with a whole new sound and image charting #1 in Latin America.

Articles have appeared in major national magazines such as: Time, Newsweek, People, etc, describing the phenomenon of Menudo. Even the major networks have featured MENUDO on their most widely viewed programs such as: "Good Morning America," "Solid Gold," "ABC’s 20/20," "Entertainment Tonight," "Now It Can Be Told," "Silver Spoons," and "The Love Boat". They also have participated in special programs such as  "Salute To The Statue Of Liberty," "Macy’s Parade," and "The Grammys". Internationally they have participated in events in Europe and Asia, but the most impressive event was that of "Soldaridad For Colombia" where MENUDO, as the headlining act, shared and received the applause and warmth of over 4 million people as they toured the streets for peace in Bogota, Colombia.

By 1984, Menudo was appointed the International Youth Ambassador for UNICEF and was to represent the organization in the spirit of peace. Since then the groups positive role model image has continued to place them at the forefront of "Anti Drug" and "Stay In School" Campaigns.

In Brazil, Menudo had become the most popular recording act surpassing all other artists including Julio Iglesias and Michael Jackson. The combined sales of the album "Mania" and "Reaching Out" passed the two million mark. With the new release of the "Evolucion" album, sales in Brazil went beyond four million. In 1986, the groups popularity continued to spread beyond the United States and Latin America to the Philippines, Japan and Italy. Their audience was now truly international. In 1987, the 10th Anniversary World Tour of Menudo was announced with sold-out shows throughout Latin America and the United States.

The 1990's saw Menudo take over the World, In San Antonio, Texas over 1,200 Menudo fans at a Darrin McGillis, Productions event jammed into a local mall, surged past security guards at a MENUDO autograph session and started tearing at the groups clothes. Extra police were called, CNN, Entertainment Tonight and all major TV Networks along with newspapers around the world air this incident and called it the return of Spanish Beatle Mania.

In late 1998 the Greatest Hits album of Menudo was released entitled "La Colleccion," and sales of the album went beyond two million units in Mexico. That an additional Greatest Hits album with other hit songs by Menudo was released that same year entitled "MENUDO La Decada" to meet consumer demand. In September, Telemundo Spanish Television network announced a weekly soap titled "Menudo Mania."

Recently, the sound and clean cut image of Menudo has taken a sharp turn toward the street sound and image of Rap music and House Hip Hop. Menudo recorded new songs in English like the smash hit "Dancin, Movin, Shakin" on McGillis Records and the on location New York City film production of "The Making of Dancin, Movin, Shakin" a 30 minute film of the new music video with interviews. The latest release of Menudo "Cosmopolitan Girl" charted #1 in Latin America.

In the last few years Menudo has made a huge impact in all the Latin American countries, and still continues to expand it’s popularity world wide. To complement the groups current success McGillis Records recorded and released a new version of the 1984 Menudo hit "If You're Not Here (by my side)". The song put Menudo on the music world map as the biggest Menudo hit to date.

2009, Menudo released Triple Threat DVD/CD music combo (collectors edition). The box set includes the DVD version of the Menudo film "Dancin Movin Shakin".  Plus never before released recordings of ex-menudo members and other Latin Teen Stars like The Cover Girls, Explosion, Nayobe, Joel and many others.

Without a doubt, it is the greatest honor for Menudo to be celebrating it’s 30th year of existence.

There is only one teen group that has:

  • recorded in five different languages....

  • broken all world records for the largest audience ever....

  • and stayed forever young!
